B-ball roundup: Carter reaches 1,000 in win; other teams fall
ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham Union junior forward Emma Carter notched her 1,000th point on Monday night to highlight local high school basketball earlier this week.
In other action earlier this week the Middlebury boys’ team fell at home, the Otter Valley boys and girls both came up short vs. local Marble Valley League rival Fair Haven, while the Vergennes and Mount Abe boys dropped tough road contests.
CARTER HITS 1,000
Carter had no trouble reaching 1,000 against winless Missisquoi on Monday: The Lake Division and Addison Independent All-Star and Division II all-state player entered the game needing eight points; she scored 28 and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Eagles coasted to a 57-29 victory.
Carter could reach 1,500 points if she remains healthy and maintains her scoring average. She became the third local standout this month to eclipse 1,000 points, joining Middlebury junior Keagan Dunbar and Vergennes senior Adam Gill.
Meanwhile, the Eagles improved to 11-6 with the victory and retained a hold on fifth place in D-II in a tight race for the No. 4 seed. They host MUHS and VUHS and play at Colchester in remaining games and have defeated those three teams previously. Colchester (10-7) is 6-2 in its last eight games, however, and both losses, including to the Eagles, have been on the road, while MUHS is also 11-6.
TIGER BOYS
On Tuesday, Cody Pomainville (25) and Trey Kaufmann (20) combined for 45 points, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Milton eked out a 69-64 victory over the Tiger boys. Ryan Brown scored 31 for the Yellowjackets. The Tigers are 4-15 heading into their season finale at home on Friday vs. VUHS.
OTTER BOYS
On Monday, visiting Fair Haven topped the OV boys, 64-45, as Slater Darren Brown scored 26 and grabbed 14 rebounds. Dylan Ellis offered 14 points as the Slaters improved to 12-6. The Otters, fighting to secure a home playoff game at 10-9, were led by Dylan Mackie’s 14. They play at Burr & Burton on Friday.
OV GIRLS
On Tuesday, host Fair Haven, the defending D-II champs, defeated the OV girls, 42-25, to improve to 14-3. Halle Coloutti scored 20 points to lead the Slaters. OV (6-10) received 12 points from Sophie Bloomer and six from Courtney Bushey.
VUHS BOYS
On Tuesday, host St. Albans remained undefeated in Lake Division play and held VUHS to a season-low point total in a 61-40 win over the Commodore boys (3-16). Adam Gill andDylan Bradford scored 14 apiece for VUHS (3-16).
EAGLE BOYS
On Tuesday, Missisquoi’s Richard Walker continued his rampage against local teams, recording 41 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as the T-Birds grounded the visiting Eagles, 95-49. Mount Abraham dropped to 5-13.
