In high school boys’ hoop: Otters, Tigers claim wins
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball play in the latter half of last week, Middlebury split a pair of close games and Otter Valley picked up a big win, but Vergennes and Mount Abraham each cropped a pair of contests.
TIGERS
On Wednesday, visiting Missisquoi held on for a 57-54 victory over the Tigers despite scoring just 19 points in the second half. Richard Walker scored 30 points for the 11-3 T-Birds, including 17 of their second-half points. Trey Kaufmann scored 19 to lead the Tigers.
On Saturday, the Tigers outscored host Milton, 9-3, in the final two minutes to snap a 62-62 tie and win, 71-63. J.D. Goettelman (seven points) grabbed three offensive boards and Cody Pomainville (22 points, four three-pointers) came up with a key steal down the stretch. Kaufmann tossed in a season-high 29 points to lead the attack and put MUHS on top for good, 66-65, and Pierson Beatty chipped in eight as MUHS improved to 2-11.
Milton’s Ryan Brown scored his 1,000th point and gave Milton (7-6) a late lead.
OTTERS
OV bounced back from a disappointing home loss to Woodstock earlier in the week by knocking off visiting Division I Brattleboro on Saturday, 71-60. Derek Aines poured in 34 points, one off his career high; hit 12 of 13 fourth-quarter free throws; and sank four three-pointers to spark OV. Payson Williams contributed 13 as OV improved to 9-5. The Colonels dropped to 9-5 with the setback. OV faces a key D-II game at Mount St. Joseph (11-3) this Monday.
COMMODORES
On Wednesday, visiting Milton edged the Commodores, 69-64. Milton broke away from a 30-30 halftime tie to lead by 11 in the fourth quarter and held on for the win. Ian Jennings scored 21 for Milton. Adam Gill tossed in 32 for VUHS, and Lance Bergmans added 14.
On Saturday, visiting St. Albans topped the Commodores, 61-48, dropping VUHS to 1-12. Details on that game were unavailable. The Commodores host Middlebury on Tuesday.
EAGLES
On Thursday, host St. Albans pulled away in the second half for a 58-38 victory over Mount Abe. The Bobwhites, who got 24 points from Jens Ulrich-Verderber, led at the half, 25-20, and then outscored the Eagles by 22-6 in the third quarter. Jackson Counter led Mount Abe with 14 points.
On Saturday, visiting Missisquoi defeated the Eagles, 82-62, as Richard Walker scored 34 for the T-Birds. Three players reached double figures in points for the 4-9 Eagles: Counter (19), Dustin Whitcomb (16) and Coleman Russell (11).
