Davydov and Fanning celebrate 40 years with concert

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury-based Dieuwke Davydov and Diana Fanning are celebrating 40 years as a duo this year. The pair will embark on their eighth concert tour of Europe this April. Before they go, the cello/piano duo and will unveil their program at Chandler Center for the Arts in Randolph on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. There will be a meet-the-artists reception in the gallery following the performance.
On the program will be Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano and Cello #2, Phantasiestück, Opus 8, #2 by Paul Hindemith, and Allegro Appassionato by Camille Saint-Saens, featuring Davydov on cello. Fanning will perform two etudes for solo piano by Debussy and Chopin’s Berceuse, Op. 57. To honor their 40th anniversary together as a duo, Davydov and Fanning have chosen the Brahms Sonata #1 in E minor, Op. 38 to be part of the program because it was on the very first program that they played together.  
Also featured on the Chandler program is a work by Randolph’s own resident-composer, Kathy Wonson Eddy. The composition for piano and cello, “Peace on Earth: A Hermit Thrush Singing in Deep Woods,” was composed shortly after the tragedy of Sept. 11, “as a touchstone for people to find their way back to peace.”
Fanning and Davydov been acclaimed in the U.S. and abroad for their virtuosic brilliance, musical insight, and remarkable rapport as a duo. Besides touring in New England and the recent release of a CD of live concert performances, they have undertaken extensive concert tours of Europe that have included recordings for Radio Netherlands. Radio audiences in the U.S. have heard the duo on the “Morning Pro Musica” Live Performers Series over WGBH-FM, Boston; in live concert performances on WNYC, New York; and on Vermont Public Radio.
