Middlebury students dance across border

MIDDLEBURY — The Dance Company of Middlebury will present their new evening of contemporary dance performance, Border | Zones this Friday and Saturday at Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. This performance follows a premiere at the historic Ángela Peralta Theatre in Mazatlán, Mexico, culminating the company’s two-week residency at the Mazatlán Professional School of Contemporary Dance (EPDM).
Directed by Scotty Hardwig, this concert centers on themes of boundaries and borders between nations, people and ideas. Border | Zones was produced as part of an international collaboration with Mexican choreographers Omar Carrum and Claudia Lavista, who are both dancers, co-artistic directors, and choreographers of the professional company Delfos Danza Contemporanea. Carrum and Lavista are also co-directors and teachers at EPDM.
Hardwig has created a new work, “sun breaks down,” in collaboration with the student company. The evening will also feature repertory work by Carrum and Lavista, entitled “Dulce Silencio (Entorno).” Both events feature student dancers from each institution.
This year’s company includes dancers Miguel A. Castillo ’18, Mandy Kimm ’17, Deborah Leedy ’18, Amanda Lorena Neira ’17, Andrew Pester ’17, Otto Pierce ’16, Liv Reuss ’19, and Emily Schreffler ’17. The Middlebury performance also features an original work by EPDM student dancer and choreographer Paola Reyes Guzman.
The Dance Company of Middlebury presents Border | Zones on Friday, Jan. 27, and Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. in the Dance Theatre of the Mahaney Center for the Arts in Middlebury. A post-performance discussion and reception will follow Friday’s performance. Tickets are $12 for the general public; $10 for Middlebury College ID card holders; and $6 for Middlebury College students. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call (802) 443-MIDD (6433) or visit go.middlebury.edu/arts.
