Middlebury College women’s hockey sweeps non-league foes

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team picked up a pair of non-league home wins this past weekend to improve to 8-2-2.
The Panthers, No. 6 in last week’s NCAA Division III poll, return to NESCAC play this weekend with two games at Bowdoin.
On this past Saturday, the Panthers racked up a 39-13 edge in shots and blanked visiting Endicott, 3-0. The Gulls, then ranked No. 10, dropped to 12-2-1.
The Panthers took the lead in the second period, scoring just after the Gulls had a quality scoring chance. Jillian Gibbs cut through the slot and backhanded a shot that Panther goalie Lin Han (13 saves) turned away. Middlebury carried the puck up the ice and Young buried a rebound by the right post after Gull goalie Vandela Jonsson (36 saves) stopped Maddie Winslow’s initial shot.
The Panthers made it 2-0 midway through the third period, when a charging Elizabeth Wulf blasted home a Katarina Shuchuk feed. Middlebury iced the win at 14:12, when Rachael St. Clair netted the rebound of an Allie Aiello shot.
On Friday, Middlebury held Stevenson (9-6) to 14 shots in a 4-1 win. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a Janka Hlinka goal midway through the first period. Jessica Young fed Hlinka from the right corner for a one-timer.
Stevenson tied the game at 18:46, when Jordan Pirrello took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by Panther goalie Julia Neuburger and found the back of an open net. The Panthers answered with 16 seconds left in the period, when Young buried the rebound of a Katherine Jackson shot.
The advantage grew to 3-1 when Winslow scored on the power play at 9:50 of the second. Winslow knocked in the rebound of a Young shot from the outside. The Panther advantage extended to 4-1 with 3:53 left in the period when Amanda Navratil broke in alone for her first career goal on a Kelly Sherman feed.
Neuburger finished with 13 saves, while Caitie Darosa made 31 stops for the Mustangs.
