OVUHS boys earn only victory in local high school basketball

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball play late last week, only Otter Valley pulled out a win, as Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Middlebury all came up short.
OTTERS
The Otters got a balanced scored effort in a wire-to-wire, 56-33 decision over winless host Springfield. Tyler Peterson (15 points), Derek Aines (14), Tyler Mackie (11) and Josh Letourneau (10) all reached double figures as the Otters improved to 5-2 — without playing a home game. They are set to host VUHS on Wednesday and Division II power Mill River on Friday in a rematch of a game OV lost on the road.
EAGLES
On Thursday, visiting Mill River — 6-1, 6-0 vs. D-II competition — rode a big first half past the Eagles, 58-42. Mike Morgan scored 17 of his game-high 26 points before the break as MRU took a 36-18 lead. The Minutemen maintained a double-digit lead in the second half.
Jackson Counter (15 points) and Coleman Russell (12) led the Eagle offense as Mount Abe dropped to 4-3.
COMMODORES
On Wednesday, the Commodores used a big second quarter to take a 31-22 halftime lead over host Burr & Burton, but the Bulldogs fought back for a 65-56 win. VUHS was within three in the late going before the 4-2 Bulldogs hit enough free throws to pull away. Adam Gill led VUHS with 21 points.
On Saturday, visiting Fairfax outlasted the Commodores, 72-64. Ben Keogh scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Bullets.
Gill (29) and Dylan Bradford (16) led the 0-8 Commodores in scoring.
TIGERS
On Friday, host Burr & Burton bested MUHS, 52-39, behind balanced scoring and defense. Trey Kaufmann’s 13 points led the 0-8 Tigers.
