ADDISON COUNTY — This young pianists from Addison County — Nico Brayton, Greta Hardy-Mittell and Alex Larrow — have been selected to perform in the Cathedral Arts Young Artists Showcase Recital at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Burlington next Tuesday, Jan. 10, at noon.
The youngsters, all students of much-admired pianist Cynthia Huard, competed to secure a spot in this recital.
Greta Hardy-Mittell of East Middlebury is a junior at Middlebury Union High School. She loves music, and has studied piano with Huard for seven years. The past two summers she attended New England Music Camp, performing in honor recitals both years. She has also attended Point Counterpoint and Green Mountain Suzuki Institute camps, working as an accompanist at GMSI this past summer.
Hardy-Mittell also plays piano in the MUHS jazz band and clarinet in the Vermont Youth Orchestra. She has been selected for the All-State Band the past two years. When not practicing or doing school work, Greta loves to write, read, run, spend time outside and play games with her family and friends.
Nico Brayton is a freshman at MUHS, where he plays piano and vibraphone in both jazz band and concert band. He has played the piano since he was six years old, and has taken piano lessons from Huard since he was 7. He often composes and improvises, with a particular talent for improvising while his piano teacher is instructing him. His other interests include math, geography, Alpine skiing and running for the Tiger cross country and track teams.
Twelve-year-old Alexander Larrow is home-schooled and lives in Cornwall. A former student of Jody Woos, he currently studies piano with Huard. This is his seventh year of piano study. He won the Vermont Division of the Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano Competition in 2015.
