Girls’ hockey ties Rutland; hosting four-team tourney

RUTLAND — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team and host Rutland skated to a 2-2 tie on Dec. 21. Both teams remained unbeaten, the Raiders at 4-0-1 and the Tigers at 1-0-1.
The Raiders took the lead on Olivia Starer’s shorthanded goal 39 seconds into the second period. The Tigers’ Lexi Bartlett knotted the score at 1-1 at 3:22 of the period, and Andi Boe put MUHS on top with 1:04 left in the middle period when her shot deflected in off a defender.
The Raiders tied the game at 13:08 of the third when Emma Mazzariello cashed in on a Starer rebound with Rutland skating on a power play.
Both Tiger goalie Rowan Hendy (32 saves) and the Raiders’ Carolyn Laird (22 saves, including several on breakaways) made big stops in overtime, during which Tiger Helen Anderson also hit the post in the final seconds.
Rutland is joining Mount Mansfield Union and Spaulding at the Tigers’ four-team tournament this Wednesday and Thursday. MMU and MUHS were set to square off at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, with the Raiders and Tide playing earlier in the day. The Raiders and Cougars play earlier on Thursday, and Spaulding and MUHS will play at 5 p.m.
