Starksboro teen to serve as legislative page

STARKSBORO — Isabella Gaffney, a 14-year-old Starksboro eighth-grader, has been selected to be a Legislative page. In that role she will assist lawmakers at the Vermont Statehouse.
Gaffney, the daughter of Celina Aiguier and Donald Gaffney, is one of 30 students selected for this role. She will serve the 2017 spring term for six weeks.
Pages deliver messages for the members of the Vermont Senate, the House of Representatives, and the various Legislative offices. Serving as a page offers a unique opportunity to observe the workings of the Legislature and to witness first-hand the often- historic events in Montpelier.
To be a page a student needs to be in eighth grade and submit an application to the Seargent of Arms.
“Bella,” as she is known, is homeschooled, but she takes art and accelerated math classes at Mount Abraham Union Middle School. Her favorite subject this year is civics.
Many Vermont politicians, including members of the current Legislature, got their start working as pages.
Gaffney herself says she hopes to be a U.S. Congresswoman one day.
