Local high school basketball teams come up short in early action

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball play earlier this week, the Vergennes boys’ dropped their home opener, the Mount Abraham girls lost a road game, and the Middlebury boys came up short on their home court. Other teams were idle.
Harwood pulled away in the late going on Tuesday to cement a 78-62 victory at VUHS in the Commodores’ season opener.
The Highlanders led, 64-60, with 2:30 to go before finishing the game on a 14-2 run. Lucas Baron tossed in 37 points to help Harwood win its opener.
VUHS came up short despite 41 points from Adam Gill. The Commodores will host South Burlington on Friday at 7 p.m.
Host Mill River rallied from a 26-14 second-quarter deficit to deal the Eagle girls a 49-39 setback on Tuesday. The Minutemen pulled ahead by 33-32 by the end of three periods, but Mount Abe edged ahead again on an Emma Carter hoop to open fourth-quarter scoring. MRU, however, ended up outscoring the Eagles by 16-7 in the period to open its season with a victory.
The Eagles fell to 1-1 despite 10 points apiece from Olivia Young and Vanessa Dykstra. They will next host Otter Valley on Tuesday in what will be OV’s opener and the first game on Mount Abe’s new gym floor.
Visiting Colchester defeated the Tiger boys on Tuesday, 74-46. The Lakers were led by Joey Giroux who hit four threes and scored 24 points.
Three players reached double figures for the 0-2 Tigers: J.D. Goettelmann scored 11 points, and Trey Kaufmann andCody Pomainvile notched 10 apiece. The Tigers will look to break into the win column when they host OV on Tuesday.
