Letter to the editor: ANWSD officials applaud letter

As members of Addison Northwest School District Board of Directors, we offer our support for the recent letter to the editor of the Addison Independent (Nov. 28) by Jason Duquette-Hoffman on behalf of the Addison Central School District Board of Directors. We stand with our friends and neighbors in condemning harassment, hazing and bullying targeted at any student or community member of any kind especially with respect to a person’s race, color, religion, creed, national origin, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
Moreover, we are committed to empowering our own superintendent and all district members, especially our students, to create a safe, civil and positive learning environment for everyone. As board members, we believe that a healthy school system provides opportunities that help students develop empathy and civic-mindedness to contribute as citizens locally and globally.
Our teachers and our administrators have already been leading the way. We thank them for their efforts especially during the last few weeks to create inclusive classrooms and schools that model open and vigorous discussions of our most pressing community issues. As we transition to a unified school board, we want to take this opportunity to make our community members and students aware of our commitment to the elimination of harassment, hazing and bullying through policy and governance.
As with all of the newly commissioned unified school boards, we are engaging in public discussions of the best policies to address these issues going forward. We welcome your input into these matters, and seek out your feedback and support in creating a learning environment that is safe and supportive for all of our students.
John Stroup on behalf of the Addison Northwest School District Board of Directors
