Five town grade schools win grants

BRISTOL — The Tari Shattuck Educational Foundation (TSEF) of Bristol recently funded 12 projects in the elementary schools of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANESU) to support innovative educational opportunities developed by local teachers. This school year, as part of its support of excellence in teaching and learning, the TSEF is granting up to $1,250 for projects to each of the elementary schools.
Beeman Elementary School received a grant to help sponsor a five-day residency of Professor Fabio Fuá. Fuá will share Brazilian culture and history with an awareness of music, race, ethnicity, and diversity and Brazilian capoeira with Beeman students. Working through music and physical education classes, students will prepare a performance for the community. A grant to purchase Common Core Literature kits that will update reading instruction materials for kindergarten to third-graders was also given.
Bristol Elementary School received a grant to support teachers in their reading instruction by purchasing Teacher’s College Units of Study for Teaching Reading for kindergarten to second-grade students, a grant to support learning science for fifth- and sixth-grade students that meets Next Generation Science Standards, and a grant for materials to support learning in the BES outdoor classroom on the Bristol Watershed Mountain Street property.
The Lincoln Community School received a grant to purchase a set of books to give their fifth- and sixth-grade students appropriate reading materials to better allow for their independent research in their upcoming study of the Civil War and history of immigration in the U.S.
Monkton Central School received grants to purchase materials to support the implementation of the reading/spelling/writing program Fundations for the Primary classes and to underwrite the Celebrating Learning Differences presentation by Puppets in Education for all the students at Monkton Central School.
Robinson Elementary School in Starksboro received grants to support mindfulness as an aspect of the C.A.R.E.S. curriculum, to help fund the visit of Vermont author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock and her work with third- and fourth-grade students, to help fund the visit of the No Strings Attached Puppet Workshop for kindergarten students to learn about storytelling and character development, and to support the Outreach for Earth Stewardship Raptor Presentation for the outdoor education initiative in kindergarten.
In addition to these grants, TSEF voted to support the Mount Abraham Union High School Fall musical with a grant of $500.
The Tari Shattuck Education Foundation is a nonprofit volunteer organization founded in 1992 as a legacy for the innovative and creative career of Bristol teacher Tari Shattuck. The TSEF’s purpose is to fund activities, projects and initiatives developed by local teachers and to foster excellence in teaching and learning in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union schools. The TSEF’s ability to fund grant requests, book purchases and scholarships relies on contributions.
