Middlebury man cited with DUI while kids were in car

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Police allege that a Middlebury man was intoxicated while driving through South Burlington last Saturday night with children in the car.
On Nov. 5 at approximately 10:53 p.m. a tipster told a South Burlington police officer he had been following a vehicle on Shelburne Road that was unable to maintain its lane of travel and he believed the driver was intoxicated. The officer located the vehicle and saw that the driver was unable to maintain his lane.
The officer stopped the car and had the driver, identified as 44-year-old Roberto Gomes of Middlebury, take a preliminary breath test. The test showed Gomes’ blood alcohol content was 0.118 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08. The officer noted that children were inside the vehicle Gomes was driving.
Police arrested Gomes for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and cruelty to a child, and they lodged him at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $750 bail.
