Clinton beats Trump in Addison County, but Minter falls to Scott here
ADDISON COUNTY — One prominent woman candidate did very well in Addison County on Election Day and another fell just short of her challenger, but both Democratic standard bearers — Hillary Clinton and Sue Minter — ultimately lost their bids for high office.
Hillary Clinton, the first woman to be nominated for the presidency by a major party, crushed her Republican rival in Addison County. With votes available in all county towns but Bridport and Granville, Clinton tallied 10,842 to Trump’s 4,784.
Statewide, Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine garnered 172,756 votes (56.52 percent) compared to Trump and running mate Mike Pence’s 91,736 (30.01 percent), according to the vote totals on the Vermont Secretary of State’s website as of 12:35 a.m., Wednesday. But, nationally, Trump at that hour was winning a majority of the electoral votes, and election forecasters that had predicted a Clinton victory the day before were pretty much all calling Trump the victor.
The story for Minter was also bleak. The Democratic candidate for governor of Vermont won 8,287 votes in Addison County, but her Republican rival, Phil Scott, tallied 9,590 here. Statewide, it was Scott on top with 160,362 votes (52.02 percent) to Minter’s 134,960 votes (43.78 percent) with 265 out of 275 precincts reporting.
