MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police have released the name of the woman whose human remains were found in woods off Route 7 in Middlebury on Oct. 21.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Vermont identified the remains as those of Sun Mi Shin, a 28-year-old Korean woman from Fairfax, Va.
Middlebury police were alerted at 11:43 a.m. that day, and spent the next several days scouring the area for clues as to the identity of the remains and how they came to be there. The Middlebury Police Department Crime Scene Unit was joined on the scene by the Vermont State Police Crime Scene Team, Addison County Sheriff’s Department deputies, an assistant state’s attorney and the assistant medical examiner.
Police are still investigating the cause, manner and date of Shin’s death. Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley said there is no indication that she was subjected to or involved in any unlawful activity leading up to her death.
The investigation is proceeding into reconstructing her activities from Virginia to Vermont in an effort to determine cause and manner of death.
