OV field hockey bounces Bulldogs, 4-2, in quarterfinals

BRANDON — The No. 3 Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team shrugged off two first-half deficits on Friday to defeat visiting No. 6 Burr & Burton in a Division III quarterfinal, 4-2.
The 8-5 defending champion Otters advanced to a semifinal to be played at Middlebury College’s Kohn Field on Monday against a familiar foe — No. 2 Woodstock. Game time is set for 6 p.m. The 9-4-1 Wasps got past No. 7 U-32, 2-1 in overtime, on Thursday.
This season the Wasps defeated the Otters in Woodstock on Sept. 24, 2-0, in a defensive battle: They held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The late-season rematch in Brandon was postponed and then canceled due to poor weather and field conditions.
On this past Friday, Hannah Hedberg scored nine minutes into the game to give the 6-6-3 Bulldogs the lead, but OV’s Allison Lowell answered a minute later. Hedberg struck again 16 minutes into the game, but Lowell made it 2-2 with 7:39 to go in the half.
Sophie Bloomer put home the go-ahead goal at 21:47 of the second, and Lowell completed her hat trick 1:14 later to pad OV’s lead. The Otters had some anxious moments down the stretch when a player had to sit two minutes with a green card, but held on for the win.
The Bulldogs earned edges of 7-6 in shots on goal and 6-4 in penalty corners. OV goalie Myliah McDonough made five saves, and BBA’s Molly Dingley stopped two shots. OV avenged a 3-2 regular season home loss with the victory.
