Girls’ soccer teams shut out in playoffs

ADDISON COUNTY — All local high school girls’ soccer teams were defeated in Wednesday playoff games, mostly in highly competitive matches.
EAGLES
Mount Abraham had finished strong in the regular season to become the only local soccer team to earn the No. 7 seed and a home game, but was upset by No. 10 Harwood, 3-1.
After Brynne Quirion opened the scoring in the first half for Harwood, Grace Norman, with an assist from Casey Ober, equalized for Mount Abe. But Kaia Cormier gave the Highlanders the lead before halftime, and Kyle Marie Hekeler added a second-half insurance goal.
Mount Abraham finished at 7-8, and the Highlanders moved to 7-5-1.
COMMODORES
Also in D-II, the No. 11 Vergennes lost for the second time this fall to No. 6 Montpelier by one goal, this time by 2-1.
Solon Lily Fournier and Commodore Ciara McClay each converted first-half penalty kicks, but the Solons netted the game-winner in the late going even though the Commodores forced Montpelier goalie Allison Chadwick to make 10 saves.
VUHS finished at 5-9-1, while Montpelier improved to 9-3-3. That game was a rematch of an early season contest won by the host Solons, 3-2.
TIGERS
In D-I, No. 12 Middlebury (5-8-2) fell to No. 5 South Burlington, 4-0. The Tigers were not credited with a shot on goal, while MUHS goalie Riley Fenster made three saves. The Rebels improved to 10-3-2.
OTTERS
In D-III, No.13 OV (5-10) gave No. 4 Hazen (12-3) a challenge before falling, 3-2. OV took a 2-1 first-half lead on goals by Olivia Drew andColby Reynolds, assisted by Jillian Flanders andLauryl Blanchard. Hazen tied the game on a second-half penalty kick before Natalie Foster-Pudvah netted the game-winner.
