VERGENNES — Between Oct. 10 and 23 a variety of incidents kept Vergennes police busy, including traffic accidents and violations, an assault, an arrest on an outstanding warrant, calls to help other departments and agencies, and mental health and family issues.
In that two-week period, Vergennes police:
•  On Oct. 10 checked the welfare of a Main Street resident on behalf of a relative who had not heard from her recently; she was OK, police said.
•  On Oct. 10 went to Champlain Discount Foods, where a client at the store with a mental health worker was acting aggressively; the Counseling Service of Addison County picked up the individual.
•  On Oct. 10 sent the department’s Drug Recognition Expert to help Shelburne police with a possible driving-under-the-influence of drugs case; the DRE determined a suspect was DUI, marijuana.
•  On Oct. 11 took a report that a South Maple Street resident’s Black Lives Matter sign had been stolen.
•  On Oct. 13 at a traffic stop on Route 22A in Panton ticketed a driver for possession of marijuana and speeding, and they confiscated marijuana and paraphernalia.
•  On Oct. 14 talked to a man who was reported to be following a woman on Main Street and talking to himself; the man apologized for appearing to follow her, but said he was just walking to the bus station.
•  On Oct. 15 went to Satterly Road in Ferrisburgh to help the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.
•  On Oct. 15 helped motorists get into their locked cars in Maple Manor and in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
•  On Oct. 15 took a report that a van had followed and tailgated a woman’s car along Main Street, including into the police station’s parking lot, before taking off.
•  On Oct. 15 called the animal control officer to handle the report of a dog running loose on Main Street.
•  On Oct. 16 ticketed a driver for going 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on Main Street after being warned to be on the lookout for a Connecticut van driving erratically on Route 7.
•  On Oct. 17 warned a North Green Street resident not to threaten staff at Bristol Family Medicine or call there again after he allegedly harassed personnel there for refusing to give him additional pain medication. Police also advised him to seek counseling, and spoke to him again on each of the next two days, once for allegedly feeling suicidal and once for again threatening providers.
•  On Oct. 17 helped a motorist get into a locked car in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
•  On Oct. 18 cited Freddie T. Garcia, 23, of Bronx, N.Y., for assault; police allege he punched a fellow Northlands Job Corps student.
•  On Oct. 18 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Hillside Drive.
•  On Oct. 18 heard from a woman that she was concerned about the safety and welfare of children at a city home. Police notified the Department for Children and Families, and on Oct. 19 checked their welfare on behalf of DCF and determined the children were OK.
•  On Oct. 18 directed traffic on Main Street while the Vergennes Fire Department handled a small apartment fire.
•  On Oct. 19 helped a motorist get into a locked car at Vergennes Union High School.
•  On Oct. 19 called the animal control officer to handle the report of a dog running loose in the Country Commons Condominiums neighborhood.
•  On Oct. 19 dealt with a minor two-car accident on Main Street.
•  On Oct. 19 handled a South Water Street barking dog complaint.
•  On Oct. 20 at a West Main Street traffic stop arrested Dustin Cannon, 33, of St. Albans on an outstanding warrant and lodged him at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.
•  On Oct. 21 failed to find a man reported to be looking in car windows and smoking marijuana on Green Street.
•  On Oct. 21 dealt with a minor two-car accident on West Main Street.
•  On Oct. 21 removed a customer who was loitering at Champlain Farms and making employees and customers uncomfortable and drove her to a Panton home.
•  On Oct. 23 looked unsuccessfully for three people reported to be loitering in front of the New Haven Road Laundromat. • On Oct. 23 failed to find a suspicious vehicle reported on Main Street.
•  On Oct. 23 backed up Vermont State Police at a one-car nighttime accident on Monkton Road in Monkton. Police said the operator fled the scene on foot, and the department canine tracked him to near Hollow Road, where he was found with cuts and bruises and wearing one shoe. Police Chief George Merkel said finding the driver was crucial to his well-being at that point, and VSP handled the case from there.
