Runners compete in Thetford: Tiger boys, girls fare among local teams

THETFORD — Middlebury Union High School fared the best among local cross-country teams competing in Saturday’s Woods Trail Run in Thetford, which drew 103 full boys’ and girls’ teams from around New England to the course that will host next month’s Vermont championships.
The Tiger boys finished 25th out 55 boys’ squads competing, while the MUHS girls were 26th out of 48 girls teams. The VUHS boys (42nd) and Mount Abraham boys (49th) also competed as groups, while the VUHS and Mount Abe girls and Otter Valley boys and girls ran as individuals, lacking five scoring runners to compete as teams.
Caroline Kimball finished 34th for the MUHS girls for the best finish among all local runners. In that race, Sadie Kass led the VUHS contingent by taking 205th out of 589 runners, Delaynah Leavitt was 290th for Mount Abe, and Kyla Dodge-Goshea was 384th for OV.
Ross Crowne led the Tiger boys by taking 43rd, and Henry Ganey (86th) also cracked the top 100 among 829 competitors. Anthony Rovi set a personal best in finishing 182nd for OV; Wade Mullin and Spencer Hurlburt were separated by less than half a second in finishing 191st and 192nd for VUHS; and Andrew Raymond led Mount Abe in 384th.
Champlain Valley won both team events. Exeter, N.H., runner Jacqueline Gaughan won the girls’ race, and Connecticut runner Drew Thompson won the boys’ race.
