ORWELL — Enjoy the autumn foliage and history too on Sunday, Oct. 9 during the Hike into History at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell from 1-3 p.m. Mount Independence Coalition president Stephen Zeoli is your guide for a special hike into history program.
Zeoli’s tour will explore what 19th century author, historian and illustrator Benson Lossing saw on his 1848 visit to Mount Independence. Lossing visited the Mount when researching his book, “Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution.” What was still visible in 1848 and also today? This is one of many programs this year honoring the 240th anniversary of the start of American construction of Mount Independence.
Zeoli is president of the Mount Independence Coalition, a former caretaker at the site, and is author of the short book, “Mount Independence: The Enduring Legacy of a Unique Place,” now in its second edition. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and dress for the weather.
Mount Independence is located on  Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village. Mount Independence, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America. Carefully follow the signs. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes the guided walk and access to all the trails. The site is open daily through Oct. 10. Call 948-2000 for more information.
