Literacy program rewards readers with bikes
VERGENNES — The Greater Vergennes Rotary Club in partnership with the Bixby Memorial Free Library celebrates with the 2016 winners of the “Booked for Bikes” program. “Booked for Bikes” is a joint literacy program designed to empower children ages 5-15 to read books during the summer months.
Now in its 19th consecutive year, this program continues to encourage area youth to read during their summer vacation. Since its start in 1998, kids have read more than 9,200 books, and 92 mountain bikes, six tricycles, 14 Kindle fire tablets, and numerous gift certificates have been given away.
This year the kids read 812 books, which is a new record. Many thanks to the Bixby Library for working to promote this summer literacy program, and special thanks to children’s library Rachel Plant for her tireless efforts to make this program such a success.
