Tiger football thumps Rebels

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School football team for the second straight week broke loose in the second half, this time in a 42-3 rout of host South Burlington on Friday.
The 0-5 Rebels were within 14-0 at the break before the 4-1 Tigers salted the game away with four second-half touchdowns. The Rebels managed only a late field goal.
Trey Kaufman scored twice for MUHS and rushed for a team-high 77 yards on 13 carries. Spencer Carpenter scored once and ran 11 times for 62 yards, and also intercepted a third-quarter pass to set up a Tiger TD.
Doug DeLorenzo caught a 26-yard TD pass from Andrew Gleason and also forced and recovered a fumble with a second-quarter sack, and Lane Sheldrick (12-yard run) and Cody Pomainville (68-yard burst) added the final Tiger TDs.
The Tigers will play at Essex (3-2) on Friday night in a key Division I matchup before returning home on Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 to host Rice and Champlain Valley, respectively, in their final regular-season games.
