Only Mount Abe wins among local girls’ soccer teams

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent local high school girls’ soccer play, Mount Abraham split two contests (not counting a victory at Middlebury covered in the Independent’s Monday issue), while Vergennes and Middlebury each dropped a pair of games.
EAGLES
On Sept. 21, visiting Milton earned a 4-0 win over the Eagles. Mount Abe goalie Genysis Berube made six saves as the Eagles fell to 1-4. Yellowjacket goalie Madison North stopped four shots.
On Tuesday, the Eagles blanked host Missisquoi, 6-0, to improve to 3-4. Nesta McIntosh netted a hat trick, Casey Ober tallied twice, Abby Mansfield scored once, Mariah Malloy chipped in two assists, and Emma Carter set up one goal. Berube stopped the only shot she faced, while T-Bird goalie Jenna Bourdeau made 12 saves.
COMMODORES
On Saturday, host Milton defeated the Commodores, 3-1. Ciara McClay scored on a late penalty kick, and goalie Anya Sonwaldt made seven saves.
On Tuesday, visiting Rice (6-1) bolted to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 lead over the 3-3-1 Commodores. After the early Rice surge, McClay scored in the 29th minute to make it 3-1, and Caroline Johnston scored 15 minutes into the second half to make it 3-2. Sonwaldt stopped four shots, and Hannah Miller made two saves for Rice.
TIGERS
On Sept. 21, the Tigers earned an 11-6 edge in shots on goal over visiting Rice, but the 4-1 Green Knights converted their chances more efficiently to take a 3-0 victory. Rice goalie Hannah Miller made 11 saves, while Tiger goalie Riley Fenster stopped three shots.
On Tuesday, Milton completed its successful run through Addison County and improved to 6-1 by blanking the Tigers, 2-0, in a physical, evenly played contest. Tatum Shappy gave Milton the first-half lead, and Brooke Caragher added a second-half penalty kick.
North saved eight shots for the Yellowjackets, and Fenster stopped six shots as the Tigers dropped to 2-4-1.
