Middlebury women’s soccer trades win and setback
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team split a pair of 1-0 NESCAC games this past weekend. The 5-2 Panthers were set to entertain Keene State on Wednesday and will visit league foe Colby on Saturday.
On this past Sunday, Middlebury scored the game’s only goal with less than 10 minutes remaining for a 1-0 win at Hamilton (2-4-1).
The goal came with 9:49 left in regulation on a corner kick. Adrianna Gildner directed the kick to the near post, where a defender headed it to the ground. After a scramble in front of the net, Katherine Hobbs wound up with possession at the far post and netted the goal, her fourth goal of the season.
Middlebury goalkeeper Kate Reinmuth finished with a pair of saves for her first shutout of the season, while Emily Dumont (three saves) and Rachel Cooley (two saves) each played a half for Hamilton. The Panthers held a 14-3 advantage in shots and took six of the match’s eight corner kicks.
On Saturday, visiting Bowdoin (5-1) came away with the 1-0 win, scoring 33 seconds before halftime.
Gildner had a pair of good scoring chances in the opening half, one that went just high and another on a free kick from 22 yards out that was saved by Bowdoin goalkeeper Rachel Stout.
Bowdoin scored at 44:27, when Anna Mellman took a shot from the left side a little more than 35 yards away that looped to the far post just over the outstretched hand of Middlebury goalkeeper Ursula Alwang (four saves).
Out of the halftime break, Middlebury looked to knot the score when Amanda Hotvedt hit a shot from nearly the same spot as Mellman’s goal, but Stout leapt up and caught the attempt with her fingertips.
The Panthers’ final chance came at the 83rd minute. After a scramble inside the Bowdoin penalty area, Stout (fives saves) dove to save Alex Barber’s low, hard shot.
Middlebury held the advantage in shots (14-8), including 10-3 in the opening half.
