VUHS, Mt. Abe earn soccer wins

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes defeated Otter Valley and Fair Haven to highlight local boys’ soccer play in the latter half of last week. In other action, OV fell again, Mount Abraham won again, and Middlebury lost two home games to tough Division I competition.
On Wednesday visiting VUHS topped OV, 3-1, getting two goals from Zeke Palmer, a goal and an assist from Max Ratti-Bicknell, and assists from Lance Bergmans andJosias Salomao.
Maxwell Williams scored for the Otters, while goalies Nate Claessens andClay Hays combined to make 10 stops. Williams scored midway through the first-half to make it 2-1, and OV Coach Dick Williams said his team’s play improved after that strike, but the Otters failed to capitalize on their chances. Palmer iced the Commodores’ win, from Salomao, late in regulation.
On Saturday, VUHS moved to 2-2 by topping visiting Fair Haven, 6-1. Palmer (three goals, two assists) and Ratti-Bicknell (two goals, assist) led the way, Ben Kayhart scored, and Salomao and Agon Hasini added assists. Cameron McLauglin andEthan Sausville combined for two saves for VUHS. Kirkland Crawley scored for the Slaters, and goalie Seth Hoenes made 11 saves.
Also on Saturday, visiting Hartford blanked the 1-4 Otters, 3-0, despite 11 saves from Hays. Coach Williams said Josh Letourneau,Reilly Shannon andNate Audette played well for OV. Two Hartford goalies combined for six saves.
On Wednesday, Mount Abe blanked host BFA-Fairfax, 5-0. Jack Willis scored twice for the 2-1 Eagles; Silas Burgess,Will Schoenhuber andEli Rickner added a goal apiece; and Owein Labarr chipped in two assists.
On Wednesday, visiting Rice got past the Tigers, 2-1, when Evan Rouleau scored the game-winner four minutes into overtime. Eric Benz had given Rice the lead late in the first half, and Camden Simpson equalized for MUHS early in the second half.
Santiago Fernandez made 10 saves for the Tigers. Kyle DeCoster made seven saves for the Green Knights, who broke into the win column at 1-2.
On Saturday, undefeated Burlington bested MUHS, 4-1. Simpson struck for the Tiger goal, and Fernandez made another 10 saves as MUHS dropped to 1-3.
