UPDATE: Branbury beach open for swimming for the weekend
This story was updated.
SALISBURY — The swimming beach at Branbury State Park in Salisbury was opened on Fridy afternoon after it was closed at noon on Friday because of a high bacteria count on Thursday
The beach was open late Friday and swimmers were enjoying the water and beach at the end of a hot summer day.
State Parks officials closed the beach on Lake Dunmore on Thursday because a water test showed an elevated level of E.coli. Branbury tested the water again on Friday morning an at midday park manager Jesse Bilodeau said he was waiting for the results of the test.
“We’re being cautious,” he said. Swimming would not be allowed until the bacteria levels meet standards set by the state Department of Health.
Bilodeau did not know when he would get the results of Friday’s test — it could be at any minute, but in the worst case the beach would remain closed over the weekend.
“We hope that doesn’t happen,” he said.
Those who wish to find out if the beach is open may call the park at 247-5927 and Bilodeau said he would try to get a note on the state park website: www.vtstateparks.com/htm/branbury.htm.
Branbury beach was closed last August after an outbreak of stomach illness, and remained closed for an entire weekend.
This is the first time that the Branbury beach has been closed this summer.
“It’s been so hot and with as little drainage as this lake gets, it’s all been good ’til now,” Bilodeau said.
