Opinion: Two stand out in Addison-1 race

In the upcoming Democratic primary, Middlebury voters are blessed with good candidate choices for the Vermont House of Representatives: incumbent Rep. Amy Sheldon along with two newcomers, Robin Scheu and Jill Charbonneau — all running for Middlebury’s two seats.
I’m sure that any of the three would represent us well, but I plan to vote for Jill Charbonneau in addition to Amy Sheldon, who has already established herself as a strong voice for the environment and for action toward energy independence and limiting climate change.
Jill Charbonneau is a native Vermonter. She has grown up and worked here in Addison County and is a graduate of the University of Vermont. More than almost anyone I know, Jill stands up for the interests of working Vermonters, and for this reason she has received the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders. She supports a $15 minimum wage, single payer health insurance, and workers’ rights — all things that I believe in. At a time when organized labor has lost ground, Jill is a committed union member. She shares Amy Sheldon’s firm commitment to the environment and the wellbeing of the planet.
Rep. Betty Nuovo’s decision to retire has opened the door for a new face in the legislature from Middlebury. I’m hoping that new face will be Jill Charbonneau.
