Opinion: Stealing political candidate signs shows no respect

Although the general election is almost four months away, the opponents of free speech are ramping up their activities.
I am supporting Valerie Mullin in her bid to win one of the two seats that Addison District-4 has in the Vermont House of Representatives. Twice in the last month, her yard signs have been stolen from the bottom of my driveway. The last incident happened on the night of July 22. As a result of this brazen act of intolerance and thievery, the police have been notified.
This is not an isolated incident. Over 40 Valerie for House Representative signs have been stolen in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro, at a cost of $250 to her campaign and supporters.
Vermonters pride themselves on respecting opposing points of view, agreeing to disagree on how to run our state government. I ask for the public’s help to stamp out this close-minded effort to stifle the democratic process. If you know or, or suspect a particular individual or group that may be responsible for this attempt to silence our First Amendment rights, please counsel them to immediately cease and desist these acts.
