Track and field athletes bring back D-II gold
EAST MONTPELIER — With Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Lydia Pitts posting three of the victories, Addison County athletes combined for 11 event wins at Saturday’s Division II track and field championships, hosted by U-32 High School.
Middlebury fared best as a team, finishing third in both the girls’ and boys’ competitions and winning a total of seven events, including individual golds by senior high jumper Hannah Buttolph, senior runner David Dregallo and junior runner Henry Ganey, plus two relay wins each by the girls’ and boys’ teams.
Buoyed by wins from Pitts and sophomore pole-vaulter Emma Radler, the Eagle girls took fourth, while the Eagle boys were sixth.
Vergennes got points from junior runner Caroline Johnston and the boys’ four-by-800-meter relay team of Quinn D’Andrea, Spencer Hurlburt, Zeke Palmer and Wade Mullin. The Commodore girls were 12th, and the VUHS boys were 11th.
U-32 won both the girls’ and boys’ team competitions. The girls’ scores were U-32, 106; Rice, 101; MUHS, 66; Mount Abe, 42; Lyndon, 40; Windsor, 38; Missisquoi, 30; Hartford, 27; Milton, 17; Burr and Burton, 14; Fair Haven 12; and VUHS, 4.
The boys’ scores were U-32, 163; Lyndon, 111; MUHS, 72; Missisquoi, 57; Harwood, 52; Mount Abe, 34; Milton, 30; Hartford, 26; Windsor, 7; Fair Haven 3; and VUHS, 2.
Pitts won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.22; the long jump in 16 feet, three inches; and the triple jump in 34 feet, 11.75 inches, while Radler won the pole vault after clearing nine feet even.
Buttolph repeated as the D-II high jump champion at 5’-2”. In the relays, the Tiger team of Chloe Kane, Gretta Groves, Kiana Plouffe and Megan Townsend won the 4×100 in 51.70, and the quartet of Helen Anderson, Ailey Bosworth, Katherine Koehler and Caroline Kimble claimed the 4×400 title in 10:13.32.
On the boys’ side, Ganey won the 800 in 2:03.28, and Dregallo prevailed in the 3,000 in 9:23.29. In the 4×400, Josh Girard, Ganey, James Whitley, and Wyatt Norris won in 3:37.56, and in the 4×800, Whitley, Ross Crowne, Haven Tate and Matthew Ferguson won in 8:41.71.
Earning second-place finishes for the Tigers were Norris, Townsend and Kane, and Julia Vorsteveld picked up an individual third.

sEagle Jackson Counter scored a second and a fourth in throwing events, while Andrea Rinaldi and Finn Clements earned third-place finishes, with Rinaldi tacking on a fifth-place effort.
