Civil War-era church service to be held this Sunday
STARKSBORO — The historic Starksboro Village Meeting House returns to the 1860s on Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m. Chaplain Michael Blakeslee of the Second Vermont Volunteer Infantry, accompanied by Lois Burbank, will lead a recreation of a typical Civil War-era church service.
During the 1860s the meeting house was the center of the community of Starksboro. Many Starksboro Civil War soldiers enlisted in that very building, and while the upper floor held regular Sunday services, the lower level functioned as a town meeting hall.
The June 12 worship service at the First Baptist Church of Starksboro will not be held at its usual location. Instead the congregation will be worshiping with Chaplain Blakeslee at the Starksboro Village Meeting House.
