MUHS girls advance in D-I softball

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 3 Middlebury Union High School softball team on Friday ousted visiting No. 6 Brattleboro, 6-3, from the Division I tournament.
The 16-2 Tigers will travel on Tuesday to take on No. 2 Mount Anthony (17-1) at 4:30 p.m. No. 5 Colchester (15-3) and No. 1 Essex (17-0) will meet in the other semifinal, and the final will be played in Poultney at a time to be announced.
The Tigers and Mount Anthony have not met this spring but do have two common opponents: Brattleboro and Fair Haven. The Tigers defeated Fair Haven, a D-I semifinalist, 7-6. MAU defeated Fair Haven, 11-0, and Brattleboro, 9-3 and 10-4. The Tigers, however, have played a much tougher schedule.
Against the 13-5 Colonels on Friday, MUHS pitcher Payton Buxton tossed a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out 11.
Buxton and Abby LaRock each drove in two runs with two hits, and Hannah Lawrence doubled twice and drove in one run.
