Tiger girls’ lax tops Rutland, 16-7, but fall to Mt. Mansfield
RUTLAND — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team coasted past host Rutland on Thursday, 16-7, and then fell in a key game at first-place Mount Mansfield on Friday.
The Tigers improved to 12-2 with Thursday’s victory and moved into second place in Division I. They were hoping to avenge an earlier home loss to the 13-2 Cougars, but Mount Mansfield won, 11-5.
The loss to Mount Mansfield would almost certainly have dropped the Tigers down to No. 4 in the playoffs..
The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to release playoff pairings on Monday morning.
The Tigers entered the MMU game on a roll: Thursday marked the second time last week they tied their season-high for goals after defeating South Burlington on Tuesday, 16-4.
Against Rutland, Satchel McLaughlin (four goals, an assist), Emma Best (four goals) and Andi Boe (two goals, six assists) led the Tiger offense.
Also contributing were Isabel Rosenberg (two goals, assist), Riley Fenster (two goals) and Emma Donahue and Mikayla Robinson (a goal apiece)
Tiger goalie Raven Payne stopped six shots, while Raider goalie Ali Merritt made 12 saves.
