MUHS boys’ tennis blanks Mount Anthony before facing St. J.
MIDDLEBURY — In the high school boys’ tennis playoffs, the second-seeded Middlebury Union High School team cruised to a first-round win over visiting No. 15 Mount Anthony on Thursday, 7-0. The Tigers improved to 10-0, while MAU finished at 6-10.
The Tigers faced a tougher quarterfinal on Saturday from visiting No. 7 St. Johnsbury (10-3), which blanked No. 10 U-32, 7-0, and played a challenging schedule this spring. Indeed, St. J. beat Middlebury, 5-2.
In individual matches on Thursday:
• At No. 1 singles, Nick Holmes (MUHS) defeated Jake D’Amour (MA), 6-0, 6-0.
• At No. 2 singles, Jon Fitzcharles (MUHS) defeated Luke Williams (MA), 6-2, 5-7, 1-0.
• At No. 3 singles, Ziven McCarty (MUHS) defeated Griffin Mattison (MA), 6-0, 6-2.
• At No. 4 singles, Owen Hammel (MUHS) defeated Brendan Hay (MA), 6-1, 6-1.
• At No. 5 singles, Jesse Rubin (MUHS) won by default.
• At No. 1 doubles, Ben Silver and Max Mayone (MUHS) defeated Peter Drew & Aaron Hulett (MA), 6-1, 6-0.
• At No. 2 doubles, Ryan Miller and Ronan Howlett (MUHS) defeated Jeson Li and Kai Bing (MA), 6-0, 6-0.
