Tiger nine wins twice; Eagle baseball defeats Milton
ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury won twice to highlight area high school baseball action late last week. Meanwhile, Mount Abraham split a pair of games, and Vergennes and Otter Valley each lost twice.
TIGERS
On Thursday, the Tigers edged Spaulding, 5-4, a key result for their hopes of making the Division I playoffs: The two teams are battling for the final playoff spot.
Senior Oakley Gordon, who has not played this spring because of a major knee injury, came to the plate as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Tigers trailing, 4-3, and drilled a two-run double to spark the win. Austin Friend earned the win in relief, tossing three innings, and Patrick Messenger drove in two runs with a pair of hits.
On Saturday, the 5-7 Tigers won at Missisquoi, 5-1, behind the complete-game pitching of Bruce Wright, who struck out seven. Simon Fisher singled twice, scored twice and reached base four times to spark the offense for the 5-7 Tigers.
EAGLES
On Thursday, the Eagles picked up their second straight win, 11-1 at Milton. Adam Whitcomb tossed a complete game for the win and struck out eight. Dustin Whitcomb doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs, and Caleb Bonvouloir’s extra-base hit drove in three runs.
On Saturday, host South Burlington topped the Eagles, 11-2. Bonvouloir, Zach Hines and Adam Whitcomb supplied hits for Mount Abe (4-10).
COMMODORES
On Thursday, host Colchester blanked the Commodores, 8-0. Will Wormer went the distance in taking the pitching loss for VUHS.
On Saturday, host Essex defeated VUHS, 13-1. Casey Kimball doubled twice for the 1-13 Commodores.
OTTERS
On Wednesday, visiting Hartford defeated OV, 4-1, after scoring three unearned runs in the second inning. Losing pitcher Derek Aines pitched well, allowing four hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings. One of Greg Whitney’s two hits for the OV was an RBI single.
On Friday, visiting Bellows Falls pulled away in the late going to defeat OV, 8-3. The Otters dropped to 2-10.
