Vermont State Police Log: Alcohol a factor in several crashes

ADDISON COUNTY — A Vermont State Police trooper observed a silver SUV traveling in excess of the posted 65 mph speed limit on Interstate 89 northbound near exit 12 in Williston on May 13 at around 6:30 p.m. State police stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as 27-year-old Griffin Gilman of Middlebury.
After Gilman performed standard field sobriety exercises, the trooper asked him to provide a preliminary breath test sample, and Gilman refused. Based on Gilman’s performance of the standard field sobriety exercises, state police took him into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The transported him to the Williston state police barracks for processing. Gilman was cited for DUI-refusal and released. He is due to answer the charge in Chittenden County Superior Court, criminal division, on May 24.
VSP also issued reports on two local incidents between May 11 and 17. First, on May 12 at 12:30 p.m. state police responded to a one-car crash on Route 7 in the Town of New Haven. Investigation showed that the driver’s license was suspended. Police cited 27-year-old Alexandra Parks of Bristol for driving with a criminally suspended license. Police had her vehicle towed and seized the vehicle’s plates.
Then state police on May 14 at 5:50 p.m. were called to Plank Road in Ferrisburgh on a report that a man had brandished a knife at a public event. The man had fled in a car toward Vergennes. Police ended up capturing and citing 30-year-old Landon Urban of New Haven for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and jailing him for lack of $100,000 bail. See a full story on this incident here.
Troopers at the New Haven state police barracks this week announced that area law enforcement agencies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint(s) in Addison County within the next three weeks. This will be done in an effort to monitor the flow of traffic along Vermont’s highways in the interest of detecting and arresting persons under the influence of alcohol or any drug that has impaired their ability to operate a motor vehicle.
