Rivalries highlight local softball action

ADDISON COUNTY — A pair of local clashes highlighted the high school softball slate late last week: Vergennes defeated Mount Abraham, which bounced back to defeat Otter Valley. OV also split two other contests, while Middlebury knocked off an unbeaten team.
EAGLES-COMMODORES
On Thursday, host Vergennes defeated the Eagles, 8-2. Tamara Aunchman tossed a complete-game four-hitter for VUHS and homered, doubled and drove in three runs to spark the Commodores. Megan Martin singled and drove in two runs, and Taylor Bresnick had a hit and an RBI as VUHS evened its record at 4-4.
Rachael McCormick, who took the pitching loss, and Dani Forand each had two hits as the Eagles slipped to 5-2.
EAGLES-OTTERS
On Friday, the Eagles knocked off visiting OV, 5-2. Jenna McArdle sparked the Eagles by tripling, doubling and singling to drive in three runs, and Forand added three more hits. McCormick earned the pitching win.
Gabby Poalino belted her third homer of the week for OV, and Maia Edmunds tripled and scored. Courtney Bushey took the pitching loss.
OTTERS
On Wednesday, Poalino launched two homers and drove in five runs to spark the Otters past previously undefeated Hartford, 14-6. Amy Jones added two triples and Edmunds and Caitlyn Ketcham tripled and singled to back Bushey’s complete-game pitching.
On Saturday, Division I Mt. Anthony improved to 7-1 and slugged three homers in a 12-2 victory over the visiting Otters. Jones tripled, singled and scored twice; Poalino doubled, singled and drove in a run; and Bushey picked up the other RBI.
TIGERS
On Thursday, the Tigers dealt visiting Colchester its first loss, 5-3, as Bridget Audet homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Payton Buxton earned the pitching win, allowing five hits, fanning five and walking none. Darcy Staats added a pair of hits for the Tigers as they improved to 6-2, while Ella Beattie andSondra Laroche singled and drove in runs against the 7-1 Lakers.
