High school nines drop first games

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes, Mount Abraham and Middlebury union high school baseball teams all dropped their season openers on the road on Tuesday in Metro Conference play.
The Commodores fell to St. Johnsbury, 2-0, despite a complete-game, one-hit effort from losing pitcher Hunter O’Connor. The Hilltoppers scored twice in the second inning on an error and RBI grounder. O’Connor struck out seven and walked none, but was outdueled by St. J’s Patrick Grennan, who fanned 10 batters and also walked none. Devin Kimball doubled for VUHS.
Host Mount Mansfield used a six-run sixth inning to break open a close game and defeat Mount Abe, 11-2. Winning pitcher James Gaboriault hit a key two-run double in the sixth.
The Tigers were no-hit by Essex hurler Maverick King, who struck out 13 batters and walked none as the Hornets prevailed, 1-0. Bruce Wright started and took the loss for the Tigers.
