Benefit Mothers Day card focuses on cooperation

MIDDLEBURY — WomenSafe of Middlebury presents the 2016 Mother’s Day card in the nonprofit’s 15th annual Local Women Artists Series. “Hazel and Jena,” by Addison County artist Mary Swanson, beautifully captures a mother and her new baby.
Swanson’s house speaks clearly of her love of art. The space is full of light with a calmness. In her work she has experimented with a variety of materials, from brilliant artwork with linoleum to intricate explorations with oil painting. She is a meditation teacher, counselor, director, producer, writer, poet and visual artist. Through her work and friends, Swanson has had the opportunity to travel to many beautiful places. She then translates these environments into breathtaking artwork.
Swanson created the art piece that is featured on this year’s Mother’s Day card specifically with motherhood and the work to end domestic and sexual violence in mind. It speaks beautifully to how we all can work together to create healthy and safe relationships and communities.
Swanson is the mother of two brilliant daughters and one extraordinary grandson. She lives in Middlebury.
You are invited to honor your mother or any special person in your life who has offered the gifts of love to you and those for whom you care. In doing so, you are helping people who may not be safe this Mother’s Day. Send a donation to WomenSafe at P.O. Box 67, Middlebury, VT 05753, along with the name and address of your chosen honoree. WomenSafe will then acknowledge your gift by sending them this heartfelt card.
Editor’s note: This piece was contributed by Carol Rule.
