Local poet to read from his new collection April 27

MIDDLEBURY — Charles Sabukewicz will read from and sign his new collection of poetry, “In Sleep’s Circumference,” at a book launch to be held Wednesday, April 27, at 7:15 p.m. at Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury.
Upon reviewing the poems, John Elder, Middlebury author of “Reading the Mountains of Home” among other noted books, had this to say: “Charles Sabukewicz is a writer fascinated with time. In strongly cadenced and original poems such as ‘Heraclitus at the Compost Bin,’ one is struck by the paradox that, while all is lost, everything remains. Again and again, this collection rises to memorable elegies such as ‘The God of Lost Cats’ and ‘Beautiful Dreamers.’”
The book is divided into four sections in which the poems offer a variety of colorful lenses through which to explore time, nature, dreams and the poet’s inner life. From the experiences of childhood to those of growing older, the reader can find many poems that speak to the human condition in a meaningful way, and are often laced with humor.
Sabukewicz’ work has appeared in Ibbetson Street, the Bryant Literary Review, the Connecticut River Review, Hidden Oak, The Lyric, POEM, Poem Town, Sunstone, Willard and Maple and Points West among other publications. A retired Middlebury Union High School English teacher, he and his wife Helen Marsh live in Middlebury.
Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society is at 2 Duane Court Middlebury. Parking is available in the MUHS lot, just south of CVUUS. A book signing will follow the reading.
Sabukewicz will present an additional reading from “In Sleep’s Circumference” on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. at the Residence at Otter Creek retirement community, 350 Lodge Road, Middlebury.
