CSAC seeks to raise autism awareness

MIDDLEBURY — The Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC), in honor of National Autism Awareness Month, will host several activities throughout the month of April to help create awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Autism Spectrum Disorder, also known as ASD, can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing different in the way a person with autism looks; rather, it’s the way a person with ASD communicates and interacts with others that indicates an issue. Additionally, people with ASD have a full range of learning, thinking and problem-solving abilities that range from challenged to gifted.
On Saturday, April 23, CSAC will host a free movie screening at the conference room of its Catamount Park offices (109 Catamount Park off Exchange Street in Middlebury). Beginning at 2 p.m. that day, see “The Lego Movie,” which is about an ordinary Lego figurine who always follows the rules and is mistakenly identified as the “Special” — an extraordinary being and the key to saving the world.
The movie is sensory friendly, will have adjusted volume and is noise tolerant; the venue will provide room to move and flexible seating. There will be some gross and fine motor toys at the back of the room, and CSAC staff will be available to help keep kids occupied. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
CSAC will have lots of Legos out for “The Lego Movie.”
On Tuesday, April 26, 3-7:30 p.m., CSAC will host a “Game Night” at The Lobby restaurant at 7 Bakery Lane in Middlebury. Anyone is welcome and no RSVP is needed. Contact Megan Mayo at (802) 388-6751 for more information.
