Commodores win state youth wrestling title
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Area Youth Wrestling club won the Vermont crown on Saturday at the state championship meet, which the organization hosted at Vergennes Union High School.
Vergennes Commodore wrestlers won seven grade-level state titles on the way to scoring 222 points, easily outpointing the second-place Essex Warriors (176.5) and third-place Colchester (160).
Otter Valley (113) took seventh, and Middlebury (92) finished 11th among the 20 teams. The Tiger team was led by repeat champion Brian Whitley in the 5th and 6th Grade Division. Eagles Youth Wrestling from the Bristol area took 14th (72).
Winning championships for the Vergennes-area team were:
• 3rd graders, Isaac Preston and Ethan Hallock.
• 4th graders, Chase Cram and Jamison Couture.
• 5th grader Eli Brace.
• 6th graders Wilder Devine and Taylor Stearns.
Fourth-grader Peter DeVries finished second for the Commodore team, and other place-winners were: Oakley Francis, fourth; Hayden Bassett, Samantha Hallock and Gabe Scribner, fifth; and Megan Mentzer, Spencer White, Carter Brown and Caden Howell, sixth.
“It was a fantastic day of hard work and dedication paying off for a special group of kids,” said Vergennes club official Eugene Stearns.
For the Middlebury team, earning third-place finishes were Nicholas Sheldrick, Heath Odell, Colton Odell and Thomas Bishop. Avery Carl earned a fourth, Haakon Olsen placed fifth, and Jordan Couture and Dylan Frost took sixth-place finishes.
