MUHS girls’ tennis takes two

MIDDLEBURY — In high school girls’ tennis play last week, Middlebury opened with a pair of 4-3 victories, over Otter Valley on Thursday in Rutland and visiting Spaulding on Saturday. The Otters also lost a close match to Mount St. Joseph on Friday.
On Thursday, the Tigers edged OV, 4-3, in a match played indoors at Grand Slam Tennis in Rutland.
In singles, Tigers Claire Wulfman defeated Sophie Wood 6-1, 6-0; Charlotte Keathley defeated Brigid Enright 6-0, 6-1; Amelia Ingersoll defeated Brittney Danforth 6-0, 6-2; and Monroe Cromis defeated Maddie Fuller, 6-0, 6-0. OV picked up its singles win when Molly Fisher defeated Ember Benatti, 6-0, 6-4.
OV swept the doubles, Otters Shana Houle and Haley Gearwar defeated Katie Isham and Tasha Hescock, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, and Brenna McCullough and Lizzy Wright won by forfeit.
On Friday, Mount St. Joseph also edged the Otters at Grand Slam, 4-3. The Mounties won the top four singles flights, while OV took No. 5 singles by forfeit and then claimed both doubles matches.
• At No. 1 singles, Nicole Bruso, MSJ, defeated Enright, 6-0, 6-0.
• At No. 2 singles, Jenna Eaton, MSJ, defeated Wood, 6-0, 6-1.
• At No. 3 singles, Olivia Corbett, MSJ, defeated Danforth, 6-1, 6-0.
• At No. 4 singles, Gabby Giancola, MSJ, defeated Fisher, 6-3, 6-4.
• At No. 1 doubles, Houle and Gearwar defeated Lori Dolce and Ann-Leiticia Blot, MSJ, 6-0, 6-0.
• At No. 2 doubles, McCullough and Wright defeated Sophie Duffy and Mauranne Geffrand, MSJ, 6-3, 6-1.  
On Saturday the Tigers prevailed over the Tide in a match played at Middlebury Indoor Tennis in which each individual matchup was tightly contested and both doubles contests went to three sets.
• At No. 1 singles, Bree Cotroneo, M, defeated, Lizzy Tchantouridze, S, 6-2, 6-3.
• At No. 2 singles, Wulfman, M, defeated Randy Dudley, S, 6-4, 7-6.
• At No. 3 singles, Ingersoll, M, defeated Shelby Jewell, S, 7-6, 6-1.
• At No. 4 singles, Cromis, M, lost to Maddie Aletzer, S, 6-7, 2-6.
• At No. 5 singles, Benatti, M, lost to Yvonne Otis, S, 5-7, 5-7.
• At No. 1 doubles, Isham and Hescock, M, clinched the Tiger win by defeating Faith Redmond and Kate Lagerstedt, S, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0.
• At No. 2 doubles, Zibby Chamberlain and Calista Carl, M, lost to Megan Brier and Michaela Boisvert, S, 5-7, 6-1, 0-1.
