Opinion: Afterschool, summer efforts vital

I believe every Vermont community and family should have access to quality after-school and summer learning programs for their children.
Children need a safe, healthy, enriching environment in which to continue to learn, create, explore and connect. Research shows that high quality after-school programs can lead to increased attendance, better behavior and improved coursework. These programs provide the consistency and structure that my children need. They provide fun, safe learning activities that help them maintain what they have learned at school. It also provides care so that we are able to work.
Expanded learning opportunities are an integral part of Vermont’s education system; we need to make sure that they are fully utilized, sustainable and accessible to all. Dedicated state funding for after-school and summer programs would be a great step to help achieve this goal. For more information, please visit www.vermontafterschool.org.
