Local artists’ exhibit ‘Disclosures’ to open at Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — In “Disclosures: Coming Out of Obscurity,” Lily Hinrichsen and Karla Van Vliet bring to light parts of their past, which have lived in darkness and obscurity, through the strength and delicacy of their assemblages, works on paper and mixed media. The exhibit runs March 11-May 7 at the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, with an opening reception on Friday, March 25, from 5-7 p.m.
Hinrichsen’s 3D pieces, or assemblages, are a manifestation of the rich and nocturnal world of her dreams and her journal writings. “While I communicate my story and identity through a variety of mediums, I chose repurposed containers and materials as I’ve always found delight and fascination in the miniature. It feels like a deep, childlike curiosity being realized.”
Van Vliet uses bits of thread, cloth, reed mat and specialty papers, incorporating layered acrylic color and a variety of inks. These pieces from her “Alma” (the soul) series emerged from a desire to work with the female face that kept arising in her art. “The miniature portraits arrived, each with her own expression, her own selfness like dream images asserting themselves onto the page. I follow a desire to memorialize these female images, creating an atmosphere of depth and history and mystery.”
The Jackson Gallery is located in the lower level of Town Hall Theater, a community and cultural venue located in the center of Middlebury. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, noon to five, and an hour before any public events in the building.
