Middlebury Police Log: Police look into sexual assault case

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a report on Feb. 24 from Porter Hospital officials about a possible child sexual assault in Middlebury. That case is under investigation.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS on Seymour Street with a woman who was believed to be having a heart attack on Feb. 22.
• Responded to a report of a man sleeping on a porch on Cross Street on Feb. 22. Police said the man agreed to leave when asked.
• Responded to a domestic dispute between a man and woman in the Washington Street Extension area on Feb. 22.
• Called Green Mountain Power crews to clear free branches hanging on a power line at the intersection of Ossie and Wilmar roads in East Middlebury on Feb. 23.
• Assisted Porter Hospital officials with a patient who was causing a disturbance on Feb. 23.
• Responded to a Bakery Lane restaurant on a report of a mental health patient who was allegedly throwing items and scaring staff on Feb. 23. Police said they took the woman to Porter Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
• Found a wallet on Elm Street on Feb. 23.
• Served a no-trespass order on a Foster Circle resident on Feb. 23.
• Searched for a “suspicious man” near the Briarwood Apartments on Feb. 24. Police said they found no one matching that description.
• Investigated a report of a drunken man walking along North Pleasant Street on Feb. 24.  Police could not find the man.
• Received a report on Feb. 24 from Middlebury Union Middle School officials about a student in possession of alcohol. Police said school administration and the school resource officer handled the case.
• Responded to a report of an out-of-control man in the Lindale Circle area on Feb. 24. Police said they took the man to Porter Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
• Received a report on Feb. 24 about a disorderly woman at Porter Hospital. Police said the woman agreed to leave, without incident.
• Located a local juvenile who had not returned home after classes at MUMS on Feb. 25.
• Responded to a domestic disturbance at a Middlebury home on Feb. 25.
• Helped Middlebury Union High School officials with a student who was refusing to cooperate with staff on Feb. 25.
• Investigated a domestic dispute between a man and wife in the parking lot of the Briarwood Apartments on Feb. 25. Police said the husband allegedly broke a tail light off their vehicle.
• Served a stalking order on a man in the South Street area on Feb. 25.
• Assisted a man who reported hearing someone walking around outside his home on Commodore Way on Feb. 25. Police said they found no one outside the home.
• Received into evidence some suspected drugs found off Court Street Extension on Feb. 26.
• Assisted a Monroe Street resident who reported receiving threats on Feb. 26.
• Responded to a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident on Washington Street on Feb. 26.
• Investigated a larceny complaint in the Washington Street area on Feb. 26.
• Were informed on Feb. 26 of the recent theft of some tools from a job site at Otter Creek Brewing off Exchange Street.
• Received a report on Feb. 26 about an altercation in the Middlebury Short Stop parking lot off Court Street Extension on Feb. 26. Police continue to investigate the report.
• Served a stalking order on a woman in the South Village Green area on Feb. 26.
• Attempted on Feb. 27 to locate a runaway juvenile who showed up back at home three hours after the complaint was filed.
• Responded to a domestic disturbance at a Sugarwood Court residence on Feb. 27.
• Investigated a report of a person smashing a car window to steal a pocketbook from a vehicle parked on South Pleasant Street on Feb. 27.
• Served a no-trespass order on Feb. 27 on a man who was not wanted at a North Pleasant Street residence.
• Picked up a drunken man from the Court Street Extension area on Feb. 27. Police said they attempted to drop him off at the Grace House in Rutland to sober up, but officials there declined to take the man due to his level of intoxication. Police said Rutland Regional Medical Center agreed to take the man.
• Responded to the Porter Hospital Emergency Department on Feb. 27 on a report of an intoxicated college student who was being uncooperative. Police said they took the youth to the Grace House in Rutland for detox services.
• Turned over, to a sober friend, a drunken college student found sleeping in the grass off Bakery Lane on Feb. 27.
• Responded to a report of a fight between two women in the Valley View Road area on Feb. 28. Police were unable to find the women.
• Served a no-trespass order on a person not wanted at a North Pleasant Street home on Feb. 28.
• Investigated a report of a man stealing gloves from Kinney Drugs on Court Street on Feb. 28. Police said the suspect is around 50 years old and was wearing a grey hoodie and jeans. He left the area riding a yellow and orange mountain bike, according to police.
• Assisted Porter Hospital officials in detaining a patient who wanted to leave prior to being evaluated on Feb. 28.
• Were informed that a vehicle had been vandalized while parked on North Pleasant Street on Feb. 28.
• Took a local, suicidal man to Porter Hospital for an evaluation by metal health counselors on Feb. 28.
• Quieted an argument between friends at a Case Street home on Feb. 28.
• Responded to a trespassing complaint at a Jayne Court apartment on Feb. 29.
• Investigated a “missing person” complaint at an Exchange Street business on Feb. 29. Police said the call came from a man who said he planned to surprise his wife at work, but she was not at work when he arrived.
