Opinion: Buck seeks seat on ACSD

My name is Suzanne Buck and I am running for the new Addison Central School District Board. I have been a resident of Bridport for 30 years where my husband and I have raised our two children. Brittny graduated in 2009 and later from the University of New Hampshire. Garth graduated in 2012 and will graduate this spring from Clarkson University.
I bring to the table a spirit of collaboration and leadership. I have served on many statewide committees as a special educator working with diverse individuals to assist in improving literacy across the state. I have also worked with the state and outside vendors on statewide assessments and research projects to make these assessments more effective for our students and their teachers.
Having served on the both the Bridport board as well as the Addison Central Supervisory Union Board I am well aware of the challenges that we face, but as an educator I can add a different perspective. I bring to the table knowledge of current best practices, Personalized Learning Plans, expanding learning past the four walls of our schools, 21st-century learning goals and outcomes that are being asked of the schools. I also advocate for those that struggle within the current system to access their education and to be able to find success. Embracing learning and quality of programming and access to that programming is a desired goal of the new district.
I am an educator because I wish to give back in honor of those that took the time with our son and helped him to become successful and not for any other reason. Getting up every morning and thinking about ways to reach the students that need it the most is what keeps me going. Making a difference one student at a time is what motivates me. I love when my students find their voice and advocate for themselves. This tells me that they are on the path to success and being able to express what they need in order for us to best help them.
My educational background is as diverse as what I bring to the table. I have a four year degree from UNH in Dairy Management and Occupational Education, a master’s in Special Education from UVM and a second master’s in Educational Leadership. I am also an associates in Orton Gillingham, a method to teach individuals how to read.
Outside of teaching I am the executive director of Vermont FFA and thus work with students across the state, was a 4-H leader for 25 years, volunteer at the Green Mountain Shootout for 13 years and have served on various local community groups as well. I am also trained as a couture seamstress and have run a successful alteration business in the past.
I thank you for reading and look forward to serving all current and upcoming students in the new ASCD district.
