VUHS cheer team fourth; qualify for New Englands

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School cheerleading team on Saturday finished fourth in Division I on its mat at VUHS, which hosted the state championship meet.
Rutland scored 208 points to win the event, followed by Essex, 187; Poultney, 176; Vergennes, 171; BFA-Fairfax, 146.5; Milton, 146.5; Lyndon, 130.5; and Mount Abraham, 100.
Mill River scored 174 points to prevail in D-II, followed by BFA-St. Albans, 166.5; South Burlington, 158; Blue Mountain, 154.5; Mount Anthony, 146; Fair Haven, 128.5; Mount St. Joseph, 116.5; Enosburg, 108; Missisquoi, 94.5; and Otter Valley, 79.
Divisions are determined by the number of competitors in the squad, per Vermont Principals’ Association rules.
The good news for the Commodore cheer squad is that New England rules differ, and the team qualified to compete, along with Mill River, as Vermont representatives in the regional Division IV all-female championships.
