MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of an overturned milk tanker in the Main Street roundabout on Friday, Feb. 19. A witness told police a vehicle had cut off the truck driver inside the roundabout, forcing the trucker to jam his brakes, causing the trailer to separate from the truck and overturn.
An estimated 40,000 pounds of milk escaped from the milk tank and flowed into the Otter Creek, via two of the town’s Main Street storm drains. Middlebury police and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles continue to investigate the case. A comprehensive update on this story appears in the A section of this issue of the Independent.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Investigated a vandalism report on Exchange Street on Feb. 15.
• Assisted a local resident who alleged he had been defrauded, to the tune of $900, in an online scam on Feb. 16.
• Responded to a report of a man using a fake ID to try and buy alcohol from the Middlebury Short Stop on Feb. 16. The man fled before police arrived.
• Assisted South Burlington Police with the arrest of a man at the Blue Spruce Motel on a charge of domestic assault on Feb. 17.
• Ticketed a motorist for driving with a suspended license on North Pleasant Street following a minor accident.
• Served restraining orders on two local residents on Feb. 17.
• Served a no-trespass order on a Middlebury man who had been drinking alcohol in the bathroom of a North Pleasant Street business on Feb. 17.
• Contacted a family member to pick up a disoriented man in the Shaw’s Supermarket on Washington Street on Feb. 17.
• Assisted Cornwall firefighters with a car fire on Route 30 on Feb. 17.
• Investigated the alleged theft of money from the Briarwood Apartments on Feb. 19.
• Helped resolve a landlord-tenant dispute in the Schoolhouse Hill Road area on Feb. 19.
• Issued multiple overnight parking violations to vehicles on Academy Street on Feb. 19.
• Interviewed a man who alleged that a drunken man had tried to punch him while he was walking along Main Street during the early morning of Feb. 18.
• Responded to a report of a woman yelling in front of a Court Street residence on Feb. 20.
• Served a no-trespass order on a man who had allegedly been asking for money from customers at the Village Depot on Court Street on Feb. 20.
• Found a stolen vehicle that had been abandoned behind the Hannaford Supermarket at The Centre shopping center on Feb. 20.
• Responded to a report of a loud party in the South Main Street area on Feb. 20.
• Issued court diversion paperwork to a man who used a fake ID in an attempt to buy alcohol from the Middlebury Short Stop on Court Street Extension on Feb. 21.
• Investigated a verbal dispute between two Middlebury men on Main Street on Feb. 21. Police separated the men and warned them.
• Assisted Vermont State Police with a threatening incident on Cave Road on Feb. 21.
• Investigated a report of a person driving erratically on Court Street on Feb. 21. Police said the driver had low blood sugar and was fine after taking some medication and some food.
• Retrieved a sexual assault examination kit from Porter Hospital on Feb. 21. The case is under investigation.
• Issued court diversion paperwork to a Middlebury College student found with an open container of alcohol on Weybridge Street on Feb. 21.
