Ripton man cited for DUI after chase

SALISBURY — Vermont State Police on Feb. 12 cited a Ripton teen for driving under the influence, among other offenses, following a chase along Route 7 from East Middlebury to Salisbury.
State police Trooper Eden Neary said it was at around 7 p.m. on Feb. 12 that he attempted to stop a driver who had allegedly committed some traffic violations on Ossie Road in East Middlebury. Police said the driver — 19-year-old Brandon Yandow — did not stop and instead took off down Route 7 before finally pulling over on Holman Road in Salisbury. There, Yandow and an unspecified number of passengers got out of the vehicle and took off through a field, according to police.
Authorities ultimately tracked down Yandow and his passengers. State police took Yandow into custody and cited him for driving under the influence (second offense); attempting to elude police; driving with a suspended license; careless and negligent driving; and excessive speed.
Yandow is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in Addison District Court on Feb. 29, according to police.
In other action during the past week, the VSP:
• Cited Matt K. Hunt, 44, of Bristol for driving under the influence, after receiving an anonymous call about a motorist allegedly drinking while driving on Hardscrabble Road in Bristol on Feb. 9. Police said they measured Hunt’s blood-alcohol content at the scene at 0.087 percent, which is just above the legal limit of 0.08. Hunt is slated to answer to the charge in Addison District Court on Feb. 29, according to police.
• Investigated a burglary at Champlain Beverage on Route 7 in Leicester during the evening of Feb. 16. Police believe a lone suspect forced his or her way into the store. State police did not reveal what was taken from the business. Anyone with information about the case should call state police at 388-4919.
• Confirmed DUI charges are pending against a Middlebury woman who was involved in a one-vehicle crash on Route 30 in Cornwall on Feb. 16. Police said Tammie Bernier, 49, was traveling south on Route 30 when she allegedly lost control of her vehicle while negotiating a curve. Police said Bernier provided a preliminary sample of her breath that revealed a blood-alcohol content of 0.094 percent. Police said they are awaiting the results of a blood test before deciding on a possible DUI citation.
• Announced Abdinajib A. Hirsi, 23, of Burlington faces a citation for driving under the influence of drugs, following an investigation of a minor car accident on Route 17 in New Haven on Feb. 13. Police said Hirsi’s vehicle had veered off Route 17. Authorities said Hirsi is suspected to have been driving under the influence of drugs.
