Opinion: Merger of ACSU would cut taxes, build stronger schools

I’m writing to tell you why I’m voting in favor of the Addison Central Supervisory Union unification plan and to ask you to please join me in voting YES on March 1.
This law encourages school consolidation at the supervisory union level. For a district like ACSU, where all elementary schools feed into the middle/high school, early action capitalizes on the most favorable tax incentives, secures small schools grants and protects merged entities from declining enrollments.
The Act 46 study committee worked long and hard to create a unification plan that protects what’s important for our schools and communities while maximizing the tax incentives available under the law. We have a history of working together through Middlebury Union Middle School and Middlebury Union High School; we all agree this collaboration was successful with recent surveys ranking these schools in the top 10 percent of Vermont schools.
This plan will allow our school leaders and communities to utilize human resources and capital/facility resources to create learning environments to meet all our students learning styles, not restricted by town borders.
